15.04.2019, 17:00h: Talk of Prof. Dr. Daniela Domeisen

Abstract:
Significant advances have been made over the past decades in predicting weather and climate. However, recent studies suggest that significant leeway remains for further extending forecast horizons at sub-seasonal timescales of several weeks. Progress has been achieved by utilizing the fact that regions of higher persistence or predictability may be able to influence regions of high variability such as Europe. A range of predictor regions have been identified that allow for an improved prediction of others. One of these regions is the stratosphere. However, the dynamics of the stratosphere and its downward coupling to surface weather is still insufficiently understood. This talk will give an overview of the current state of predictability and understanding of the coupling between the stratosphere and surface weather.
